Adebayo Adewunmi, a DVM V
student of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Ibadan, have
been named one of the twelve recipients across Africa to receive the
highly competitive MSD/WVA Veterinary Student Scholarship for 2024. The
announcement marks a significant milestone not only for Adewunmi but also for
the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, which had five winners in 2023 but sees
just one this year, a sign of the scholarship's increasing
competitiveness.
The MSD Animal
Health and World Veterinary Association (WVA) scholarship program aims to
support exceptional veterinary students around the world who demonstrate
academic excellence, leadership, and a commitment to advancing animal health
and welfare.
"Now in its 8th
year, the program received over 600 applications from across the globe,
highlighting the increasing need for support among veterinary students and the
strong reputation the program has built. This year, 40 veterinary students from Asia/Oceania,
Africa, the Middle East and Latin America have been awarded scholarships
of $5000 USD each.
These scholarships recognize the students’ outstanding academic performance, commitment to the veterinary profession, and active engagement within their communities. The selection process considered academic merit, motivation toward their career path, community involvement, and strong endorsements from their academic institutions.
The WVA and MSD Animal Health extend sincere thanks to all who applied and warmly congratulate the 2024 awardees. We also encourage those who were not selected this year to apply again in future editions of the program." the official statement read in part.
