The University of Ibadan's Governing Council has selected Professor Peter Olamakinde Olapegba to serve as the institution's 14th Vice-Chancellor, following a rigorous screening process that considered eight contenders for the role.
Chief Adebisi Akande, who serves as Pro-Chancellor and heads the Governing Council, made the announcement on Wednesday, July 22, 2026. The decision came after the Council endorsed a recommendation put forward by the Joint Council-Senate Selection Board, with the move coming shortly before the current Vice-Chancellor's term ends on November 1, 2026.
The search for a new VC kicked off back in April 2026, in accordance with the University Act, with job openings publicized across three national newspapers. Although only six candidates submitted applications initially, a dedicated Search Team set up by the Governing Council sourced two more qualified individuals, bringing the applicant pool to eight in total.
After all eight candidates went through interviews, the field narrowed to five finalists who advanced to the last round of evaluation. The Joint Council-Senate Selection Board then met with these finalists and put forward Professor Olapegba's name for the top job, a choice the Governing Council backed unanimously.
Prior to this appointment, Professor Olapegba held the post of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) and taught as a professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Ibadan.
