ANGRY VET STUDENT FIRES STERN WARNING AT THE AVMS PRESIDENT, SENATE OVER FACULTY BASIC DUES INCREMENT, CALLS FOR CONGRESS.
It is no news that the present administration of the Association of Veterinary Medical Students, University of Ibadan, led by Mr Adeoye Caleb has taken a decision to increase the faculty basic dues by over 33%. This has been met with mixed reactions especially as the nation langours through the peril of an economic recession. Not just that the move is undesirable for most students, the way in which it was implemented was unorthodox and lamentable. This has made a lot of people believe the president and his cabinet are either demonstrating gross ineptitude or deliberate disregard for protocols.
VetNews organisation understand from a reliable source who disclosed to us under the condition of anonymity that the present AVMS executives did not formally inform the senate nor the dean of the faculty before increasing the dues in the most peremptory of manners. Another source also disclosed that the senate president had to cajole the executive president by all means necessary just for him to address the senate and state reasons for the increment.
A lot of gossips are presently being peddled around if the Senate is in connivance with the AVMS executives or not, but one man, Mr Oyekunle Dunmoye Enoch, has decided not to wait too long before it becomes too late to act. In an open letter he wrote to the senate last week, he calls for the Congress, the highest decision-making arm, to prevail over the situation, citing constitutional provisions why it should be done that way.
Mr Oyekunle wrote: “Silence or gathering in groups to discuss about the current state or changes in an association will not be the best solution to look into whatever may be happening. But instead there should be a coming together of members of such an association in such a way that all views will be well-represented. This should be the way forward because an adage says two good heads are better than one.
The scenario cited above is exactly the current state of things in our association (the Association of Veterinary Medical Students). My ears and that of my colleagues have heard about the latest development rocking the association to be specific the increment in dues for the session.
This has actually led to a form of open confrontation between two renowned senators within the association, argument between some set of individuals, to mention but a few.
Powerful senators, I believe the constitution of our noble Association is still very much in use, and it is clearly stated in the constitution in Article (iv), session (ii) sub session (ii), that;
a.      Shall be decided/determined by the Executive Council and the Senate based on the financial realities of the time, and such shall be communicated to the congress.

b.      Such special levy can be debatable and adopted at the congress if need be and must be adopted by 2/3rd majority of the congress.
Moreover, I think we still have the third arm of government (congress) which are supposed to be well informed about the latest development in the association. Ma, if you are yet to hear anything, our own ears are full already.
In addition to such an increment in dues, the congress has the outmost right to know the reasons for the increment and to decide if they are to abide by it or not, it is not a case that only the Senate should see to.
I, OYEKUNLE DUNMOYE ENOCH hereby want to request for a well-publicized congress that should come up any time soon, so that we will be able to trash out important issues as pertaining to our noble association.
Thanks in anticipation of your prompt action.”
In any democratic setting, such gesture is expected to be well-communicated to the members of the association. It should never have been imposed on the students. The already tense situation was even escalated as some close allies of the executive president allegedly boasted publicly that they have increased the dues, and there is nothing anybody can do about it. Those whom, a lot of people believe, may have influenced the somewhat rash decision taken by the present set of executives.
To avoid further troubles or escalation of the present situation, we hereby call for calm and proffer that due constitutional process be followed at all times
