AVMS UI SENATE PLAYS POLITICAL PRANK, SHUTS SITTING'S DOOR ON ASSOCIATION MEMBERS

The Senate Council of the Association of Veterinary Medical Students, University of Ibadan (AVMS UI) released a notification of a senate sitting held on Friday 13th September, 2019 mandating all association members to be formally dressed to the sitting.

This notification, which was duly signed by the Senate President, Mr Oluwadare Franklyn A., is unambiguously a deliberate political subterfuge to deprive many association members from attending the sitting.

Usually, non-senators that attend senate sittings are just observers of the proceedings of the sitting, making no contributions whatsoever to whatever is being discussed. Because they are essentially not part of the meeting, this unarguably makes ordaining formality in their dressing very extraneous. Additionally, knowing fully well that most members of the association are usually not formally dressed on Fridays, the Senate Council still implacably mandated them to come to the Friday sitting in formal dressings. Not only is this mandate a very strange one, it is also a probable indicator that our senators are aspiring for some covert agenda and a pointer to superfluous use of political power by the Senate Chamber.

According to the second item on Section IV, Sub-Section VII of the association's constitution, all senators are to be formally dressed within the faculty. Even to a layman, this does not make any provisions for forcing non-senators into dressing formally to any of the sittings held within the faculty. In fact, the style of dressing of any congressman to sittings should be their deliberate volition, provided that they do so decently. Furthermore, several sittings have been organized by the Senate Chamber and there have always been room for entry of members regardless of the formality or non-formality of their appearance.

The senate is hereby urged to uphold the nobility of the association by refraining from superfluous moves and they should be more reasonable in the mandates they pass. The hallowed chamber is commended for the job well done so far and may God bless our noble association.
