AMAZING FACTS ABOUT ANIMALS

We all have had some exposure to some funny and quite absurd (weird) peculiarities about animals. Such have been learnt in comparative anatomy classes, gist with friends or when surfing the net (like the fact that the penis of the Tom-cat points backwards), but trust me, you’ve not known about some other cool stuffs about the animal kingdom.

Let’s check some of them out;

  1. A new-born Chinese water deer is so small it can almost be held in the palm of the hand.
  2. Ostriches can run faster than horses, and the males can roar like lions.
  3. A lion in the wild usually makes no more than twenty kills a year.
  4. The leg bones of a bat are so thin that out of the 1,200 species of bats, only 2 can walk on ground. These are the Vampire bat and the Burrowing bat.
  5. The only mammals to undergo menopause are elephants, humpback whales and human females.

  8. To escape the grip of a crocodile’s jaw, push your thumb into its eyeballs-it will let you go instantly.
  9. It is much easier for dogs to learn spoken commands if they are given in conjunction with hand signals or gestures.
  10. Even a small amount of alcohol placed on a scorpion will make it go crazy and sting itself to death!
  11. Just one cow gives off enough harmful methane gas in a single day to fill around 400 liter bottles.
  12. Pear and apple seeds contain arsenic, which may be deadly to dogs.
  13. The blue whale weighs as much as thirty elephants and is as long as three Greyhound buses.

AMAZING FACTS ABOUT CATS YOU NEVER KNEW

After dogs, cats seem to be the next animal people now keep as pet. Apart from its unique way of eradicating rats, most cat owners are convinced that cats are truly amazing. Cats are endearing, mysterious, loveable and kooky. Owners often wonder what often goes on in those fuzzy little head. This piece is all about (domestic) CATS! Here are certain amazing facts about them you never might have known and I hope they’ll change your view of them and make you an AILUROPHILE

  1. In terms of development, the first year of a cat’s life is equal to the first 15 years of a human life. After its second year, a cat is 25 in human years. And after that, each year of a cat’s life is equal to about 7 human years.
  2. Cats can rotate their ears 180 degrees.
  3. Domestic cats spend about 70 percent of the day sleeping. And 15 percent of the day grooming.
  4. Cats have five toes on each front paw, but only four on the back ones. It’s not uncommon, though, for cats to have extra toes. The cat with the most toes known had 32—eight on each paw!
  5. Meows are not innate cat language—they developed them to communicate with humans.
  6. A cat has the power to sometimes heal themselves by purring. A domestic cat’s purr has a frequency of between 25 and 150 Hertz, which happens to be the frequency at which muscles and bones best grow and repair themselves.
  7. A cat’s nose is as unique as a human’s fingerprint.
  8. Cats (like dogs) only sweat through their paws and nowhere else on their body. A cat’s cerebral cortex contains about twice as many neurons as that of dogs. Cats have 300 million neurons, whereas dogs have about 160 million. A cat’s cerebral cortex contains about twice as many neurons as that of dogs. Cats have 300 million neurons, whereas dogs have about 160 million.
  9. Cats can be lethal hunters and very sneaky, when they walk their back paws step almost exactly in the same place as the front paws did beforehand, this keeps noise to a minimum and limits visible tracks. This I believe is the reason for the verb “Cat-walk”.
