After Vet School, What’s Next?

In just few weeks, 600 level veterinary medical students will be done with their final examinations and they will be getting ready for their life after undergraduate education. Therefore, some veterinary finalists were briefly interviewed by a reporter in VNO to know what they are willing to do after graduation. Their responses are as follows:

Adebiyi Damola: Good morning, basically I just want to develop my skills and some other things but they will essentially be what I’ve learnt in vet school. I’ll try to attach myself to an established clinic so as to learn more and broaden my horizon. Then I’m also looking forward to my service year (NYSC) during which I hope to work with some people. I also want to build up some of my skills since I’m into programming and I would love to perfect my frontline skills. So, that’s all.

Adesunmibola Oluwaseyi: Yeah, actually I’ve been considering large animal practice basically, which I’d want to do after vet.

Sanusi Oluwaseyi: Well, I want to go into poultry production, a massive one which I’ve already started on a small scale basis, but I want to move it into a large scale thing.

Lawal Harmony: So, after graduation, I hope to, first of all, get experience, go into business. I hope not to do only vet, because the way this country is, even abroad, people don’t live only on one source of income. Even the richest people in the world invest in many other things. More so, I don’t hope to be in Nigeria because looking at the state of our course, Nigeria isn’t very vet-friendly. I also hope to go into selling of cars, gadgets, electronics, and the likes. I hope to practice veterinary medicine, travel out, do my masters, get experience, attach myself to a doctor and obtain a fellowship / license to practice in that country. That’s basically what I want to do.

Adeoye Oluwatoyin: Okay, first, I would want to take a road trip, I’d like to travel a bit, somewhere. You know, just take out the whole stress and think, restructure for the next phase of my life. Specifically, during NYSC, I’d love to get my international passport, write IELTS (if I have to), start applying for every opportunity I get to do a masters abroad and hopefully, by the time I get the opportunity, I’ll just leave here. I also hope that when I’m doing my masters, I’ll get to intern in a private clinic over there, in whatever country I end up in, and gain experience because I’m really passionate about small animal medicine, so I want to set up my own small animal clinic. I want to be able to learn under people for a while. I’ll have a five year plan, and probably I’ll fix marriage somewhere there.

David: Basically, after NSYC, I’ll be going to work in the line of dairy production for some years i.e. cattle rearing and the likes. But I’ll first have to do internship for some years before going ahead to start what I want to do.

Dago Faith: Well, after graduation, I’ll like to go fully into missions, i.e. into ministry, but before I go into missions fully, I’ll first do an internship in my preferred area of specialization – ophthalmic surgery which will be very relevant to me in the field. Thank you.

Adagbon Blessing: Alright, for me, graduating from vet would be lovely. First and foremost, I have a lot of plans in place. I would like to practice for just a short while. After that, I’d love to go into my passion which would majorly be to own something pertaining to vet, although I’m not the ‘vet-type-of-person’. I’d like to do other stuffs like things in line with my ‘calling’. That’s all. Thank you.

Taofeek: Actually, I have a lot of plans of things I want to do after vet. But putting it in an orderly manner; my dad has a farm which right now isn’t functioning well i.e. it’s not really profitable from an economic perspective. So I want to do a major shake-up, organize the farm, making it sustainable and profitable. After that, I’d go for my MSc. (which I wouldn’t want to do in Nigeria but in Europe or America). And I’ll like to work with a research institute or an international organization to further my career.

Fadele John: It’s a long journey, so if you want to be successful, you don’t need to stick to one thing. It’s not just one plan, there’s a plan ‘A’ and a plan ‘B’. The main thing is I’ll like to practise vet, which is why I’m in vet school. And so, if I want to practise vet and thrive, then I must be looking towards outside the shores of this country. Since, I’ve gone through the very rigorous processes involved in the training, I know it’s still going to be rigorous. So, I’ll still have to go through the processes again, getting a license.

Now, if that doesn’t work, rather than sitting back at home, I’ll probably start up a poultry farm and go into meat production basically, which is something you can do quickly. This will be pending the time I achieve plan ‘A’. Thank you.

Adeoye Damilola: Actually, things I plan on doing after school are diverse. One of them, which I’ve been doing even before resuming, is Network marketing. I plan on taking my network marketing business to the next level as this will demand a lot of time and sacrifice. I’ll need to get more sponsors, customers and the name I plan on giving the business is ‘ADAM-EVE’S COMFORT’. It will be a platform where you get to cure people of different ailments using herbal supplements.

The second thing I’d love to involve in is a small business set-up related to vet. I would want to start that with fish farming, the name of which I’ve not yet decided on yet, though every of my businesses will be under the umbrella name “ADAM-EVE’S CONGLOMERATE”.

Another thing I’d also want to continue, since I’ve started it, is my fashion business. I wouldn’t want to sit down with it, so I’ll probably just employ a stylist to handle that for me, and it would be named, “ADAM-EVE’S ATTIRE WORLD”.

And the last thing I’ll be doing is Mini-importation. I have a dream to make it stand out as companies like DHL, GIG Logistics, etc.

These are the four things I’d love to venture into, though I’ve started some and will want to continue on them, developing them to maturity. That will be all.

Adedokun Kawthar: As per what I want to do after graduation, I’m actually planning on having my service on a poultry farm and I might even still work there for a year or so thereafter so as to gain enough experience to establish my own standard poultry farm which I’ll be managing myself. I think that’s what I want to do. We plan but God’s plan is the best. That’ll be all.
