HEALTH FIRST

UI students are found almost everywhere around the campus to an extent that one continues to wonder whether the session is virtual or physical most especially veterinary medical students. While it is pertinent to study as students who will one day be veterinarians, we cannot but remind ourselves that health first, then other things can follow. While we thrive for good grades this semester, here are some healthy tips to make you stay wholesome.

Eat a heathy and balanced diet: Balanced diet.

It is not uncommon knowledge how students eat poorly during lecture as there are little or no time to cook but you need a diet that contains all classes of food in right proportion. A diet is said to be balanced when the carbohydrates is 60-70%, protein 10- 12% and fat 20-25% (narayahealth.org). balanced diet gives your body the nutrient it needs to function correctly. Do not compromise your healthy meal with studying. Depending a lot on junks is harmful and can cause memory and learning problem, lessen ability of brain to control appetite and in fact increase the risk of dementia.

Exercise as often as you can.

This concerns those who receives lecturer in the four walls of their rooms who no longer have to do the early morning trekking to class. In fact, taking bath in the morning is now voluntary, of course lectures are virtual. However, do you know that exercise contributes a lot to wellness of the body, it helps brain health and memory, reduces risk of chronic disease and also good for muscle and bone. Exercise is not only performed outside but also can be done in your room. Push up, jogging, jumping even dancing are simple exercises one can perform in one's room.

Get enough sleep.

That this semester may be convoluted should not turn you to bull frog or dolphin. Get enough sleep. Just like eating healthy food and getting exercise, sleeping is also vital to good health. Scientists have shown that adult(18-64) needs 7-9 hours sleep per day. Not having enough sleep is risky and may cause impaired focus and decision making, increased risk of heart disease, obesity, diabetes and Alzheimer's.

Wear proper protection.

The reason why school is not yet opened and subscribed to virtual class is obvious, yes, because of covid-19. it's necessary you protect yourself by following the preventive measure laid down by NCDC which are but not limited to social distancing, using of nose and face mask, Washing of hand frequently with soap and water or alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

In addition, protect yourself against malaria. Malaria which is a common disease caused by plasmodium from mosquito. it's necessary you prevent yourself from mosquito bite via the use of mosquito net, spraying room with insecticide, cleaning of surrounding etc

Remember that HEALTH IS WEALTH. ALWAYS STAY HEALTHY.
