I have an idea, it seems to be a small idea and I will like to share it with you, maybe we can see sense in it and do something about it as a group, as a body and as professionals.
As Veterinary doctors to be, there is a great challenge in front of us as we don't have any clinic or farms waiting for us and with the number of Veterinary doctor pumped out from the various varsities, there is indeed a small pool for such a large crowd.
Then what is my idea; what if we increase the pool, what if we push for a more standardized animal production? It seems to me as we are waiting for people to invest in animal production while we come in and maintain the animals’ health. What if as Veterinarians (veterinary council) we actively push for animal production, standardize the process by practically buying lands, drafting out a good biosecurity measures and invite farmers/investors to start production (now this is majorly for large animal and ruminant)
For small animal. What can we say about how impure most breed of dogs are in Nigeria especially due to cross breeding by dog breeders and pet lovers? People who are looking for pure breed dogs import dogs without the animal being quarantined and examined, then the dogs introduce new diseases into the country. The point of all this is that as veterinarians we need to be proactive in animal production. If Nigeria will change from subsistent animal production to advanced controlled mechanized animal production with all the critical control points observed and standardized.
The great successes we see is not because there is a road map by the veterinary council, I believe there are just great minds who dared to venture in this and found success. My idea is we can make work available for us and many veterinarians to be if we ensure that animal production is stimulated by us then prevention and control of diseases will be better, yes even the greatest threats of microbial resistance can be curbed.
This is just an idea, my idea. I know ideas don't change the world but they are the roots of the changes we see in the word. I hope this idea resonates with you and we change the animal production landscape of Nigeria. You and I can do it.
