FASHION : ARE YOU REALLY WHAT YOU WEAR?

ARE YOU REALLY WHAT YOU WEAR?

Ever noticed the confidence, power, joy or the feeling of being the world’s most valuable person when you wear your “killer” outfits? There is just some sort of empowerment that comes with fashion. Was that the original idea behind the making of clothes? I really cannot tell but in old times, you could identify a nobleman by his clothes and you could tell who choked of poverty by the quality of the fabric on their back.

What I particularly enjoy about fashion these days is how a person can be expressive with what they wear. No rules and even if they were, rules are made to be broken.

Growing up, a pattern mix was a no-no but recently, it has been pulled off so well, all one need to do is learn the art of blending these beautiful patterns and Viola!! A total fashion god.

Years ago, Ankara or “native” attires were saved for Fridays but with the blends and great artistic designs, they can be worn anywhere, anytime and any day, exuding elegance and the African pride.

What about Fashion signatures?  A fashion signature item is a piece of clothing or an accessory that defines you, like an identity marker you may say.

Let’s talk about Nigerian celebrities with their fashion signatures. Cool or not? We would let you be the judge of that.

Dj Spinall, popularly known for his African print- designed caps. Wears it so often, it should be a fashion verb e.g. I think I might just “spinall” to this event.

Flavour, known to carry his dreads in the middle of his head with both sides of his head shaved.

Adekunle Gold, known for his love for traditional materials especially the beautifully designed “Adire”

Fashion, they say is a form of expression but I think we need to ask ourselves, what do we want to express? Your dress sense reflects your personality, character, mood, style and who you are as an individual. So, whenever you are about to get dressed, let the question of “who am I” ring out so loudly because “You just might be what you wear”.
