HOW TO COPE WITH DRY SEASON AILMENTS
Dry season is an inevitable period that falls between November and middle of Match in this part of the world. It brings along with it harmattan, dusty wind, scorching hot weather and dry air. Unfortunately to the detriment of man and animals, it comes with countless ailments. The weather condition has been discovered to be best favourable for the incubation and spread of diseases.
Being hot and dry season, it dries cloth within seconds likewise skin, gut and lips. Therefore, it is imperative that we stay hydrated by always keeping our water bottles close. It is significant to take a lot of water this period. Without overemphasis, more water should be taken so as to lubricate muscles and joints, also to ensure proper functioning of the kidney and other necessary metabolic processes.
Cracking / breaking of lips and skin are common during this season. Cracking lip can be prevented by application of lip gloss on the lip to prevent dryness, which subsequently leads to cracking and shedding of the epithelium. Dry skin can be prevented by application of water- retaining cream , oils, or skin jelly. Bathing regularly and frequently is also encouraged so as to get rid of dirt and leave the skin moist.
Dry air which is associated with dust and micro organisms is also characteristic of this season. Asthmatic patients are highly predisposed to asthma attack, therefore, it is advisable for patients to always go around with their inhaler. Use of nose mask is also recommended for all, as this will prevent inhalation of dust coupled with micro organisms that can result into runny nose, sneezing, sore throat, and general tract disorder which can cause great discomfort.
Runny nose and sneezing are associated with cold. It is necessary to prevent ourselves from cold by guarding ourselves with cardigan or any cold resistant clothe that can keep the body warm. Taking hot tea or drinks in the dawn would also help in reducing cold. Exercise does not only improve muscle strength and make heart work effectively, but also prevents cold.
Conjunctivitis popularly called ‘Apollo’ characterized by swelling and redness of the eyes is also prevalent during this period. Personal hygiene of frequent washing of hand and face with diluted disinfectant, avoid touching and rubbing of eyes, washing away of discharge of your eyes, not sharing make up and use of sunshades can be of help against bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus) that cause conjunctivitis.
Eating of balanced diet, especially fruits, and vegetables.
Fruit and vegetables contain vitamin C needed to boost immunity to fight against some infection associated with this weather.
Lastly, extra care should be taken with fire and other home appliances, so to avoid fire disaster. Matches should be properly extinguished and disposed after use. Home appliances should be put off when not in use. Switch off anything electrical before leaving the house. Burning of refuse should be meticulously supervised so as to avoid fire destruction and inferno.
