MONEY RITUAL IN NIGERIA
It is not strange to us again how the get rich-quick syndrome has become a pandemic in our society, especially among the youths who are said to be future of “tomorrow”. It really saddens seeing how youths are trying to go any length to have the so called currency of life (MONEY).
Some weeks from now, it was reported across the nation, via media outlets how three boys whose ages were 17, 19 and 20 years got arrested in Ogun state for killing a young lady, who was said to be girlfriend to one of them. One of the thrilling episodes was that they claimed to have learnt the whole process from Facebook, where they summoned the courage to begin the ritual process by cutting off her head.
Obviously, looking carefully at their ages and experience as life implies, they are way too young to be thinking of money ritual. Maybe or maybe not, many thoughts must have run their minds as regards whether they will make it in life or not. A lost course must have been engineered within their cognition, which made them see a way through, without thinking of the consequences as the case may be.
Now that they eventually got ensnared with the euphoria of getting rich, they must be held responsible for their actions. However, we can’t overwrite reasons which must have fostered the inhumane act.
Here are some reasons of inference to money ritual.
Poor parenting:
Parents are said to be first teachers known by their children, to protect, guide, provide and not to mislead. Unfortunately, some parents do otherwise. They don’t care about their children/wards as they should. Some even encourage their children to source for money in any way they can, not minding how far they would go. A Yoruba adage says "Your child is not doing laundry work and he brings clothes home; here is a thief right in your face and you did not catch".
The get-rich quick syndrome that has plaqued the nation thrives on the shoulders of poor parenting more than any other.
Social influences:
Social displays characterized by flaunting of supposed owned/acquired wealth and properties on the social media tend to send the wrong messages down the spines of viewers and the seemingly “poor” proteges and admirers. The idea of how to belong to such group without running through the normal route, develops and gets fertilized by incessant and persistent visiting of the social media with the hunger of being rich.
Another format of the social influence is the liberty and freedom to display whatever, given by the creator/inventor of the application; for instance, uploading of sacrifices and the clues to go about it on the facebook plartfom. As mentioned earlier in the article, the ritualist children caught, confessed to have learnt all they did from the social media (facebook).
Unemployment:
Unemployment, better still, joblessness; the most cruel attack on the youth, has lured many hands into deadly acts such as money ritual. The society often times has every reason to point accusing fingers to the state of the nation under the supervision of the government.
The bulk of blame is thrown at the government, which cannot be outrageous due to the ripple effect of economic collapse brought up by unhealthy policies and execution, suiting only the government.
Sequel to the neglect of youth employment, whether direct or indirect by the government, joblessness has been able to display its prowess and strength by employing youths into the new job scheme.
Theft, kidnapping, money ritual and others; an idle man’s workspace.
Possible solutions and way out are not out of ensuring that poverty is withdrawn and jobs installed.
