The IVMSEC (Independent Veterinary Medical Student Electoral Commission) has announced an upcoming online by-election set to take place on September 6, 2023.
This by-election is being conducted to fill key positions that remained uncontested and hence vacant after the general election. Specifically, the posts of Assistant General Secretary, Public Relations Officer, and Welfare and Health Secretary are up for grabs.
In contrast to the unopposed victories in the general election, the by-election has now become a battleground, with multiple contestants vying for some positions.
For the role of Assistant General Secretary, the contenders are Olaiya Ismiat Adewumi (DVM II) and Onibon Aderinsola (DVM III). In the Public Relations Officer category, Dotun Akande and Karen Akuma, both from DVMIII, are competing. Meanwhile, for the position of Welfare and Health Secretary, Samuel Daniel DVM IV is in the running.
When asked about the IVMSEC's readiness for the online election, Segun Itakorode, one of the committee members, expressed confidence in their preparations. He cited the absence of a press night and manifesto night, explaining that the limited time available for organizing the by-election prompted these decisions. He also mentioned that the candidates have already begun releasing their manifestos online for voters scrutiny.
Segun stated, "Although it's a bit of a rush, we are fully prepared and ready for the election. There may be a brief orientation session on voting tonight. The decision to forego manifestoes and a press night was due to the time constraints, but candidates are sharing their manifestos online for everyone to access."
