Unless you are living on Mars, you can already hear the beats of the drums of pandemonium and turmoil like fire lays hold of fuel in the not so distant land of academia, UNILAG. The student union of our sister school had gone on to protest the hike in their fees. They converged in their modest numbers in what seemed to be a peaceful protest to air their grievances on why it should never be only to be disrupted by armed security officials.
Again, unless we have had amnesia or suffered a major blow to the head, we can not in a hurry forget the EndSARS protest of 2020 where youths were put on the run for their lives for merely staging a peaceful protest. Anybody whose frontal lobe still performs all its proper physiologic functions can easily see a pattern. There is perhaps a move to frustrate, silence or stifle the voice of the people to the policies made by the government. This, the government achieves as it piece by piece, inch by inch nibbles away at our rights to freedom of speech and expression. This is clearly seen in the tussles between ASUU and the FG; how ASUU keeps getting to go on strike with no forward movement but constant deadlocks for as far back as...who knows?
Such experiment carried out by the government in the infamous protest of 2020 was probably made in a bid to instill fear in the masses as regards having to speak their minds on any policies they are implementing. Once might have been a mistake, but now, twice is a pattern. Thrice is clearly an habit. This clearly comes to play again in today's episode of the UNILAG's protest.
The government better bear in mind that they can not be wrong and get right and it does not matter how hard they may try. Democratic rule was never designed to be this way. True democracy never stifles contrary opinions. True democracy is never forceful nor given to pandemoniums and disorder. True democracy is supposed to stand supreme, bearing in mind and concern the plights, the view and opinion of the masses. It is time we all keep our end of the deal. If not, revolution might be the only solution and it might not end well.
