On April 13, 2023, I witnessed a disappointing defeat as the Veterinary team succumbed to the Faculty of Environmental Design during the debate round. While I had hoped for victory, the outcome did not come as a complete surprise. Looking back on this event, nearly a year later, I now grasp the reasons behind the Vet team's loss, despite their capable representatives.
Recent research from Tilburg University and the University of Lausanne highlights the pivotal role of fan support in determining a team's success or failure. Their findings, drawn from studies of the Argentina home football league, conclusively demonstrate that a team is 20% more likely to falter in any competition without the backing of fans.
Even Usain Bolt, renowned as the fastest man on earth, acknowledges the significance of a fervent fan base in achieving competitive triumphs. Following his victory at the 2009 World Championships race, he expressed gratitude to his supporters, recognizing their role in propelling him forward.
Thus, when considering why the Vet team stumbled in the first round, the answer is clear: they lacked substantial fan support. The Jaw War competition boasts a tradition of fervent cheers erupting from the audience as each contesting faculty is announced. However, when the Vet team's name was called, the hall fell silent, with only a handful of supporters, including myself, the Editor-in-chief, Paul, Avms president, Teefash and a few key executives, offering their encouragement. In contrast, the Faculty of Environmental Design enjoyed a robust following that day, despite their student population being less than half of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine's.
From what I’ve observed, Vet students are among the most apathetic student body in the University community. In various programs I have attended, other faculties, even those as demanding as Pharmacy, have more students represented than Veterinary students. I am reminded of George Santayana's words: "Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it." Unless our faculty rallies a significant number of supporters for this year's Jaw War, we risk repeating the same disappointing outcome as last year. However, with a united front of positivity, enthusiasm, and energy, who knows? This year's Jaw War may be within our grasp.
