Election of the new executives and senators of the Association of Veterinary Medical Students, University of Ibadan, AVMS UI is less than a week away, and various WhatsApp groups have been filled up with campaigns, with contestants sharing their experiences and what they have to offer students if given the mandate to lead.
The elections at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine have historically been dull and uninspiring, often conducted unopposed, leaving voters with no choice but to vote for a single option, even if it's not the most competent candidate for the task ahead.
However, this year marks a significant departure from the past. Unlike previous years, where many positions went uncontested, this year's election sees a multitude of candidates vying for various posts. Last year's election saw all contestants, including the President, General secretary, Vice president, Financial secretary, and Sports secretary, running unopposed, with positions such as Health and welfare director, Assistant general secretary, and Public Relations Officer filled via by-elections.
The upcoming election will feature two Presidential contestants, two Financial secretaries, and two Health and welfare directors, with other positions also being contested. This surge in participation is a significant improvement and a testament to the evolving democratic process within the association.
VNO urges veterinary medical students to maintain their enthusiasm and look beyond the challenges associated with holding leadership positions while pursuing a veterinary degree. They should view these positions as opportunities not only to learn but also to develop themselves for future leadership responsibilities.
Manifestos are scheduled to be presented on Thursday, February 29, 2024. Students are encouraged to attend and listen to their candidates' plans rather than basing their votes solely on personal connections.
Voting should not be overlooked, as it will shape the direction of veterinary medical students' association in the coming year. This year's election promises to be one of the most competitive in recent memory, and students must keep the passion alive and vote wisely when the time comes.
