'Don't underestimate your profession; there is wealth in hidden treasure,' says Prof. Cadmus

Professor Simeon I. B. Cadmus has urged students of veterinary medicine not to underestimate themselves and their professions, asserting that there is wealth in hidden treasure.

Prof. Cadmus made these remarks while discussing the topic titled "Impact of Veterinary Profession and Values on Nigeria Economy" at the AVMS Annual Public Lecture held at the Faculty of Veterinary Auditorium on Thursday, March 14, 2024.

Addressing the topic thoroughly, Professor Cadmus highlighted numerous values provided by the veterinary medical profession that not only impact Nigeria's economy but also generate significant revenue for veterinarians.

Enumerating the values and opportunities available for contemporary veterinarians to contribute to Nigeria's economy, he mentioned areas such as medicine, livestock livelihood, public service, private engagement, agriculture, public health, food industry, pharmaceuticals, diagnostic services, disease prevention, and the financial sector.

He further encouraged students to fully explore the opportunities inherent in the veterinary profession, stating, 'We haven't reached half of what we can contribute. You can make a significant impact if you focus on the opportunities available.'

The second speaker, Dr. Niyi Bankole from Zoetis, elaborated on how to make an impact by guiding the audience through the process of starting a private veterinary business, with a focus on poultry. He explained key considerations before embarking on such a venture, including analyzing the livestock landscape, conducting feasibility studies, and ensuring a continuum of care.

Dr. Bankole urged the students to be prepared to learn beyond the confines of the veterinary curriculum, stating, 'Only 10% of the required skills will be acquired here; the remaining 90% will be learned outside.'

Attendees at the event included the Dean of the Faculty, Professor Olufunke Ola-Davies, the Sub-dean Undergraduate, Dr. Anifowose, faculty staff, and honoured guests: Dr. Babatunde Olaiya, Dr. Moses Olayemi, Dr. Kayode Bakre, Dr Dapo Agbato and Dr. Theresa, who was represented by Dr. Jesutobi Samuel.

Awards were presented to the honoured guests and speakers, with closing remarks delivered by the sub-dean shortly after 2 pm.
