Today, 30th July, 2024, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine held a career talk for her students and neighbouring secondary schools.
The event which is part of the activities lined up for the commemoration of the 60th anniversary of Veterinary education in Ibadan held today at the Faculty auditorium at 10am and had in attendance distinguished members in the society, students and lecturers of the Faculty and secondary school students invited to grace the event.
Dignitaries on the high table include the Dean, the chairman of the day, Prof. Oyeyemi, the faculty alumni president, Dr. Faramade, the panelists of the day, Dr. Alabi, Dr. Bakre and Dr. Yusuf Adeiza and lastly, the faculty officer, Mrs. Dibosa.
The Dean, Professor Ola-Davies in her opening remarks acknowledged the presence of the chairman of the event, distinguished professors, colleagues, panelists, all invited students and teachers.
In her words "I have the singular honour to welcome you to this event. We're here this morning because we know many of our students don't really understand the intricaties of the profession and we're here to provide enlightenment on the subject matter"
Speaking also, Prof. Oyeyemi who is the chairman of the event said "This morning is another landmark in the anniversary and to tell you what you're capable of doing as a Veterinarian".
Speaking first at the event, Dr. Alabi who is a consultant to the office of the Senior Special Adviser to the President on livestock development and also a consultant to the Tony Elumelu Foundation amongst other mind-blowing portfolio spoke extensively on his journey into Veterinary practice and how it had led him into places he'd never have imagined.
He elaborated on the 3D's required of students in learning: Integrity, Focus and Dedication. He urged the students to find purpose and understand what they want for themselves.
Dr. Bakre who once served as the AVMS president and Secretary of the UI student union stated that he never wanted to choose Vet, but as fate would have it, he found himself there. Opportunities he came across rooted his feet in the profession and has seen tremendous progress over the years
He urged the students to read everyday as it's tough work and also be prepared always as opportunities lost might not be regained.
He added that students shouldn't live a triangular life, endeavouring to engage in extracurricular activities as it helps build skills needed outside the University.
The third speaker, Dr. Yusuf Adeiza, a NAFDAC official and a gaming enthusiast spoke about the need for students to understand their personality and uniqueness and embracing it. He said "Nurture your gift. Your qualification can take you into a room, but your gift will open rooms for you".
The Dean chipped in the notion that UI is a brand that's revered across the globe. She urged the students to maximize the education they're receiving and carry themselves in the manner worthy of a professional.
Afterwards, the Dean presented gifts to the secondary school present at the event and awarded the guest speakers, making them "Ambassadors of the Faculty" on the occasion of the Faculty anniversary.
Students of the Faculty also went home with notebooks donated by the alumni body.
