Today, August 1, 2024, marked the fourth day of the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Ibadan. Today's event held at the Faculty auditorium featured a symposium that explored the anniversary's theme: "The Goals, Gains, and Gaps."
In her welcoming address, the Dean of the Faculty, Professor Olufunke Ola-Davies, expressed gratitude to the guest speaker, Professor Oyewale Tomori, for honouring the invitation and assured the audience that they would learn a great deal from the program.
The Chairman of the occasion, Professor Oluwayelu, a Professor of Virology, encouraged the audience to pay close attention, highlighting the speaker's inspirational impact on both students and staff.
Delving into the topics, Professor Oyewale Tomori emphasized the importance of continuous learning, stating that education never ends. He then outlined the goals of veterinary education, which include improving animal and human health, contributing to the concept of One Health, and playing a pivotal role in boosting the national GDP through innovative livestock management practices and public-private partnerships.
Discussing the gaps, he noted that veterinary professionals often feel isolated and do not effectively communicate their contributions. He also mentioned that they sometimes accept standards below their professional levels. He cited the example of the Faculty library he visited which in his words is outdated and needs to be revamped to aid effectual learning.

Professor Tomori also highlighted numerous gains veterinary education has made in national development and urged the audience to honour the deceased and praise the living.
Finally, he advised students to work hard and be patient, assuring them that success and financial rewards would follow. He also admonished them to be flexible in their dealings and proceeds to demonstrate it with a video of a dancer.
The lecture was followed by a question-and-answer session and the presentation of an award to the guest speaker, Professor Oyewale Tomori.
Also present at the event were the Faculty Officer, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Dibosa, Prof. M.O. Oyeyemi, Prof. Ayinmode, Dr. Folusho, Dr. Igado, Dr. Anifowose, Dr. Olaogun, and other faculty lecturers.
The program concluded with closing remarks from the Chairman of the event, Professor Oluwayelu and a vote of thanks from Dr Igado.
