The Association of Veterinary Medical Students, University of Ibadan (AVMS UI), today, March 6, 2025, held its annual public lecture titled "The Role of Veterinary Medicine in Shaping Public Health in Nigeria."
The event, which took place at the Faculty Auditorium, was graced by distinguished personalities, including the Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Ilorin, Professor Azeez Oyebisi Mistura; the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Livestock Development, Honourable Idris Abiola Ajimobi ably repeated by Mr Ademola Ajibola; the Dean of the Faculty, Professor Olufunke Ola-Davies; as well as faculty staff and students.
In his opening speech, AVMS President Ahmed Saheed Olaide emphasized the relevance of the lecture topic to society. He encouraged the audience to pay close attention to the speakers and expressed his gratitude to them for honouring the invitation.
The first speaker, Professor Azeez, highlighted the indispensable role of veterinary professionals in public health. She emphasized that veterinarians play a crucial role in curbing zoonotic infections, thereby enhancing both human and animal health. According to her, "Veterinarians’ swift intervention can curb zoonotic infections, ultimately improving public health. Also, a broad approach to disease surveillance will benefit both animals and humans."
She further elaborated on the contributions of veterinarians in ensuring disease-free animal products, promoting environmental health, formulating policies alongside other medical professionals, and upholding animal welfare and safety.
The second speaker, Honourable Idris Abiola Ajimobi, represented by Mr. Ademola Ajibola, focused on livestock development and public health. He discussed the significant impact of food security, disease surveillance, and livestock production on public health.
In his words, "Veterinary medical professionals play a pivotal role in preventing zoonotic diseases, ensuring food security—an essential factor in national economic stability—and conducting disease surveillance, which aids in early detection and prevention of outbreaks."
He also stressed the importance of veterinarians in tackling antimicrobial resistance (AMR) within the food chain, preventing potential health crises.
Following the lecture, there was an award presentation and the launch of the AVMS Editorial Board’s newsletter magazine "The Stallion". Awardees included Professor Azeez, Dr. Idris Abiola, Dr. Alayande, and Dr. Ayo Lawal.
The event concluded with a closing remark by the Sub-dean undergraduate, Dr Anifowose, followed by the National Anthem.
