World Veterinary Day, annually observed on the last Saturday of April, aims to celebrate the contributions of veterinarians to the health of animals, people, and the environment.
This year’s theme "Animal Health Takes a Team" focuses on the importance of teamwork in veterinary care, acknowledging the fact that effective veterinary services often rely on the collective efforts of a range of professionals, including veterinary nurses, technicians, researchers, and other allied health professionals, according to the WVA announcement.
It reminds us that animal health is not maintained by veterinarians alone - it’s a collective effort involving veterinarians, laboratory technicians, researchers, animal caregivers, and other health professionals.
The idea for World Veterinary Day started in the year 2000. It was created by the World Veterinary Association (WVA) to highlight the important role veterinarians play in society. Every year, a new theme is chosen to focus on a specific part of veterinary work, such as animal welfare, food safety, or public health.
Since 2019, the WVA has partnered with Health for Animals, the global animal health industry association, on the World Veterinary Day Award. The recipient of the World Veterinary Day Award will receive $5,000 for best promoting the annual theme.
The WVA and Ceva Sante Animale have also recently announced the winners for the 2025 WVA Global Veterinary Awards.
The awards, €5,000 each, recognize four veterinarians for their contribution toward the WVA's four strategic objectives: animal welfare, medicines stewardship, One Health, and veterinary education, with one overall "Veterinarian of the Year" selected from these recipients.
For the University of Ibadan and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, it is a great feat as Ahmed Saheed, erstwhile AVMS president has been announced as the winner of the "Veterinarian of the year" award 2025.
Saheed, alongside other winners will be recognized during a special awards ceremony on July 19 at AVMA Convention 2025 and WVAC 2025.
