Livestock farmers and agricultural investors have been urged
to adopt and maintain strict biosecurity measures as a fundamental part of
their operations. This call was made by Dr. Olayinka Anifowose, a seasoned
veterinarian and livestock expert, during an appearance on Crest FM 91.1
Ibadan’s weekly agriculture-focused programme, Agric Desk, hosted by Dr. Bayo
Kolade.
Dr. Anifowose, who serves as the Sub-Dean (Undergraduate) of
the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Ibadan, and Vice Chairman of
the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA), Oyo State Chapter,
emphasized that effective biosecurity is essential not only for improving
livestock productivity but also for safeguarding public health.
Speaking on the topic, “The Importance of Biosecurity on
Farms,” he stressed that biosecurity is a critical preventive strategy that
helps reduce the spread of diseases and the need for reactive treatments.
“Veterinary consultation should begin from the planning
stage of any livestock venture, not when there is already a problem.”
He highlighted the growing global threat of antimicrobial
resistance (AMR) and explained how good farm management and preventive care can
reduce the use of antibiotics, thereby minimizing the risk of resistance.
“Proper biosecurity reduces the reliance on medication, and
in doing so, helps us tackle antimicrobial resistance more effectively,” he
added.
