Ijapa Oko Yanibo: Unveiling the Longevity of the Tortoise

‎Ijapa, the tortoise is the constant symbol of wisdom in all our indigenous folklore. There are numerous tales we've heard and read of his adventures and conquests in the mythological world of stories. But even in the real world, across the diverse landscapes of Nigeria, from the arid Sahelian regions of the north to the coastal areas of the Niger Delta, the sight of a tortoise evokes a sense of ancient wisdom and enduring life.

These shelled reptiles, often moving at a slow and almost majestic pace, have captivated humans for centuries with their remarkable lifespans, usually outliving generations of their observers. But what are the secrets behind this extraordinary longevity?

‎The oldest living tortoise is Jonathan, a giant tortoise from Seychelles (a British protectorate) who is 192 years old. To put this fact into perspective, Jonathan has witnessed the reign of eight British monarchs including the remarkably long seventy-year reign of Queen Elizabeth II. I'm sure you're also wondering why this grand creature lives for so long. 

The tortoise's long life isn't attributed to a single factor, but rather a fascinating interplay of biological adaptations and lifestyle choices honed over millions of years of evolution. One key element is their slow metabolism. Tortoises possess a significantly lower metabolic rate compared to mammals of similar size. Their bodily processes, from heart rate and respiration to digestion and cellular activity, occur at a much slower pace. This reduced rate of energy expenditure likely translates to less cellular damage over time, potentially slowing down the aging process. Think of it like a rugged Toyota car consuming little fuel and experiencing less wear and tear as compared with the delicate, at least in our clime here in Nigeria, Ford Jeep which consumes more fuel and is more prone to damage.

‎The diet of the Ijapa is also special. Tortoises are herbivores, consuming food primarily consisting of tough vegetation. Their plant-based meals are generally lower in calories and protein compared to the diets of carnivores and omnivores like us. This lower metabolic demand further contributes to their slow pace of life and potentially reduces the production of harmful metabolic byproducts( cue biochemistry) that can contribute to aging.

‎The shell, oh the beautiful shell of Ijapa! It is hard to forget all the wonderful Yoruba tales we were told as kids of how the Tortoise got his shell. Remembering and thinking about those stories shows how fascinated our ancestors were with the Tortoise. The shell is another significant factor in the longevity of these animals. This robust, bony armor provides exceptional defense against predators, shielding their vulnerable bodies from attack. In the wild, especially during their younger, more vulnerable years, this protection is paramount. The shell offers a considerable survival advantage, reducing the risk of premature death and allowing it to live long enough to reproduce many times.

‎Furthermore, tortoises exhibit a slow rate of growth and sexual maturation. They can take many years, even decades, to reach their full size and reproductive maturity. They also can withstand harsh environmental conditions. Tortoises, unlike the Ijapa of our folklore, can tolerate periods of hunger, drought, and extreme temperatures. They do this by entering states of reduced activity called brumation (a reptile hibernation-like state during colder periods, though less pronounced in many Nigerian species). This ability helps the tortoise survive challenging environmental fluctuations that might be fatal to other animals.

‎Finally, and still much less understood, are the cellular and genetic mechanisms that contribute to their longevity. Research is ongoing into the unique DNA repair mechanisms and antioxidant defenses that are efficient in the longevity of tortoises. The potential of studying their genes is to unlock secrets of slowing down aging in other organisms which will be most beneficial for us as a species.

‎The slow, steady lives of tortoises and their wonderful mythological stories continue to offer us valuable lessons in resilience and how intricate the interplay of biology and environment is in achieving remarkable longevity in these creatures.
