The new Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Prof. Olugasa has officially welcomed students to a new academic semester with an address that tackled key issues affecting academic life, professionalism, and the Faculty’s future development.
In his opening remarks, Prof. Olugasa appreciated students and staffs likewise for the support and show of care towards him as he resumed his new position, alongside other principal officials.
A major focus of the address was class attendance, which the Dean described as a sensitive issue. While acknowledging the economic and social challenges confronting students, he urged that official letters be submitted to the Sub-Dean (Undergraduate) whenever genuine reasons for absence arise. In his words "I can't employ emotions in an institution that is not personal. If there'sanycase that require you to be absemt, follow the due process and write a letter to the Subdean"
On matters of professionalism and compliance, the Dean underscored the importance of proper dressing and appearance, stressing that these standards reflect both the Faculty’s and students’ commitment to excellence. He also addressed deferment procedures and the payment of school fees, urging cooperation with management to ensure smooth academic operations.
The Dean outlined his vision for the faculty, promising improvements in several critical areas. These include strengthening farm and practical exercises, expanding infrastructure, providing buses for practical sessions for students, ensuring free access to sanitary facilities, and equipping the faculty farm with cameras to enhance learning while generating revenue.
An interactive session followed, where students raised questions on pressing issues. Concerns highlighted included enforcement of dressing codes, free use of the auditorium during AVMS Week, the cost of logbooks, infrastructural challenges in 400-level lecture halls, and access to cadavers for anatomy training. The Dean, in his response mentioned that those matters would be deliberated. He confirmed that transcript fees have now been reduced to ₦4,000.
Reaffirming the Faculty’s commitment, the Dean assured students that management is ready to serve and urged for student's cooperation in achieving collective progress.
