"Every time... rice, garri, rice, rice and beans, jollof rice(concoction, I mean). Aren't you tired?"
This is the common sigh of a student whose palate is suffering from monotony. The relentless cycle of cafeteria rice, plain noodles, or instant meals can make even the hungriest student yearn for a change. Sometimes, it feels like the same bland plate is on repeat every single day.
But your taste buds deserve better.
This is where a hearty plate of spaghetti and meatballs steps in. Inspired by the recent surge in pasta popularity, this classic dish offers a burst of flavor that can easily break the routine and lift your mood.
This dish isn't just about great flavor; it’s a power-packed meal designed for demanding student life:
* Energy Boost: The pasta provides essential carbohydrates, giving your brain and body the fuel needed to tackle long lectures and late-night study sessions.
* Protein Power: Meatballs are an excellent source of protein, which is vital for sustained fullness, helping you concentrate longer, and aiding muscle recovery (even if it's just from carrying heavy textbooks)
* Rich in Nutrients: The tomato sauce is loaded with antioxidants, such as lycopene and Vitamin C, which are great for supporting your immune system.
* Balanced Meal: You get a balance of macronutrients—carbs (pasta), protein (meatballs), and nutrients from vegetables/herbs (sauce)—all in one convenient dish.
* Mood Booster: The sheer comfort of a warm, flavorful meal, perhaps topped with a little cheese, is a simple, effective way to boost your spirits.
Next time you’re tired of the same old food, take a stand for your stomach and your mind. Treat yourself to something different.
Spaghetti & Meatballs Recipe (4 servings)
Here is a straightforward recipe to help you create your own taste of heaven in the kitchen:
Ingredients:
For the Meatballs:
* 500g ground beef (or ground chicken/turkey)
* 1 small onion, finely chopped
* 2 cloves garlic, minced
* 1 cup breadcrumbs
* 1 egg
* 2 tbsp milk
* 2 tbsp grated cheese (optional)
* 1 tsp curry powder or masala
* Salt and black pepper to taste
For the Sauce:
* 2 tbsp vegetable oil
* 1 onion, chopped
* 2 cloves garlic, minced
* 400g tomato paste or crushed tomatoes
* 1 tsp sugar (to balance the acidity)
* Sliced bell peppers (optional)
* 1 tsp dried basil or parsley
For the Pasta:
* 400g spaghetti
* Salt for boiling water
Directions:
1. To Make the Meatballs
* In a large bowl, thoroughly combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, chopped onion, minced garlic, cheese (if used), and all seasonings.
* Roll the mixture into small balls, approximately the size of a table tennis ball.
* Heat a small amount of oil in a pan and pan-fry the meatballs until they are nicely browned on all sides. Do not worry about cooking them through yet. Remove them from the pan and set them aside.
2. Prepare the Sauce
* In the same pan, add the chopped onion and minced garlic, sautéing until they turn golden.
* Pour in the tomato paste or crushed tomatoes, along with the sugar, sliced peppers, and dried herbs.
* Allow the sauce to simmer for 10 to 15 minutes until it thickens slightly.
* Gently add the browned meatballs back into the sauce and let them cook for another 10 minutes to allow the flavors to fully meld.
3. Cook the spaghetti
* Bring a large pot of salted water to a rolling boil.
* Add the spaghetti and cook according to the package directions, aiming for *al dente* (cooked through but still firm to the bite).
* Drain the spaghetti and toss with a drizzle of oil to prevent it from sticking together.
4. Serve and Enjoy
* Place a generous portion of spaghetti onto each plate.
* Top with the rich tomato sauce and meatballs.
* Garnish with a sprinkle of fresh parsley or grated cheese.
Enjoy your delicious palate-cleansing meal!
