AVMS Welcomes Freshers, Marks Beginning of Journey with Lab Coat Ceremony

The Association of Veterinary Medical Students (AVMS) Freshers’ Welcome and Lab Coat Ceremony 2026 commenced at approximately 3:20 p.m. with a welcome address delivered by the Faculty President, who advised both freshers and 200-level students to remain focused throughout their academic journey.

The Dean of the Faculty followed with a brief history of veterinary education at the University of Ibadan, noting that the program began over 63 years ago. He urged 100-level students considering changing faculties through another JAMB attempt to reconsider, emphasizing the promising nature of the veterinary profession. He also highlighted experiential learning as a key approach to successfully navigating the course.

The next speaker, Professor Fagbohun, delivered a lecture titled “Cloaked in Purpose: Academic Excellence as the Bedrock of Veterinary Impact.” He began by affirming the intelligence of the students and stressed that memorization alone is insufficient in veterinary studies. He encouraged active learning and outlined several tips for academic excellence, including prioritizing faith, building confidence, maintaining a clear mind, studying effectively, attending classes regularly, and fostering positive relationships with peers and senior colleagues. He also advised students to focus on self-improvement rather than competition and to take care of their physical health through proper rest, exercise, and a balanced diet. He concluded by stating that building a strong foundation in veterinary medicine goes beyond academic grades.

Dr. O.O. Igado, the third speaker, shared her personal experiences in veterinary school and professional practice, dating back to 2002. During her interactive session, she engaged students in a brief activity to address inattentiveness. She described veterinary training as six years of intense work and emphasized the importance of mindset, diligence, and collaboration. She cautioned against isolation and laziness, and advised students to be mindful of how their appearance reflects on the profession.

Professor Azeez, who spoke next, delivered a lecture titled “Veterinary Medicine as a Platform.” He highlighted the profession as an opportunity for visibility and growth, stressing the importance of building and maintaining strong professional relationships, noting that an individual’s network contributes significantly to their net worth.

The final speaker, Dr. John Jesuwale, CEO of Branch Vet World, emphasized the importance of prayer as a source of direction and strength in overcoming unforeseen challenges. During his address, refreshments, including donuts and bottles of “Premium” zobo, were distributed to attendees.

Following his speech, a giveaway session was conducted before the program transitioned to the highlight of the event, the lab coat ceremony. This ceremony was anchored by the Sub-Dean (Undergraduate), Dr. Olayinka Anifowose. He remarked that while students would wear many coats during their training, the white coat holds special significance as it symbolizes the beginning of their journey in veterinary medicine.

The event concluded at approximately 6:30 p.m., after which the 200 level students participated in a photo session to commemorate the occasion.
