Vet. Medicine Stuns MBBS, hands them first defeat in 900days in SEALS opener

 The 2026 SEALS Cup tournament commenced yesterday evening at the Old SUB Football Pitch with a significant upset, as the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine secured a narrow 1–0 victory over the reigning champions, MBBS. A second-half strike from Ololanimi proved to be the difference in a highly contested opening fixture.

The match began with MBBS asserting the dominance expected of defending champions. Within the opening minutes, the medical side applied sustained pressure, winning an early corner and frequently testing the Veterinary Medicine backline. 

Despite the initial siege, Veterinary Medicine gradually found their footing, neutralizing the champions' tempo.

The closing stages of the first half were defined by the heroics of the Veterinary Medicine captain and goalkeeper, Orodin. He produced a series of crucial interventions, notably saving a dangerous free-kick from Sir Dave and winning a one-on-one duel following a counterattack. The teams headed into the tunnel at halftime with the scoreline deadlocked at 0–0.

The momentum shifted immediately after the restart. Veterinary Medicine emerged with renewed intent and broke the deadlock. Ololanimi finished off a well-coordinated team move with a low, driven shot that evaded the MBBS goalkeeper to make it 1–0.

Invigorated by the lead, Vet. Medicine continued to push, with Omideyi nearly doubling the advantage shortly after. However, MBBS did not concede without a fight. The champions forced Orodin into another vital save at the mouth of the goal as the tides turned and the pressure mounted on the Vet defense.

There was a moment of tension when Orodin required medical attention following a heavy fall during an aerial tussle from an MBBS free-kick. The skipper eventually remained on the pitch to see out the game. In the final minutes, a defensive mix-up almost gifted MBBS an equalizer, but the resulting shot missed the target before being flagged for offside.

As the final whistle blew, Veterinary Medicine celebrated a hard-fought victory. For MBBS, the defeat marks a month desired start to their title defence having been unbeaten in the tournament for 900days.
